Music // SPILLY CAVE “PEDDLER OF WHIMSY”

I found this in a very unusual way (for me): an instagram ad for guitar strings. In this case the algorithm got it right in more than one way - I actually did need guitar strings and I also did need these jams.

I was drawn in by the unusual vibrato/chorus guitar, which to my ears sounded like it was using the Chase Bliss Warped Vinyl pedal (one of my favorites). But something about the presentation told me there was much more to be experienced, so I went and checked out the entirety of the self-titled record and was blown away. I don’t totally have a point of reference for this, which made it all the more intriguing. My brain kept searching for something to grasp, and the best it could do is Aztec Camera mixed with early Beck, but that only gets you about 25% of the big picture.

This is extremely good songwriting and truly one of the more original things I have come across in recent years. New record is coming out Jun 28th, 2024 (per the Spilly gram).
